You’re all warmly invited to the lecture series hosted by the Geographical Society of Hamburg! Every two weeks there’ll be talks on the topics “Nature Conservation and Biodiversity” and “Peace and Conflict Research.” They’re on Thursdays at 6:15 pm in room H2.
The first talk is already happening tonight! Prof. Florian Dünckmann from the University of Kiel will be speaking on: “The Village as a Political Space: Politics of Idyllic Places and Micro-Topologies of Power.

Zusammen (im) Fluss – das war die Zielsetzung eines Projektseminars, das im Sommersemester 2025 unter der Leitung von Dr. Katrin Singer und Dr. Isabel von Holt stattgefunden hat. Dafür haben Studierende des Instituts für Liberal Arts & Sciences und des Instituts für Geographie aus verschiedenen disziplinären Perspektiven das Denken und Praktizieren um und mit Flüssen erprobt und den Fluss vor ihrer Haustür besser kennengelernt: die Tideelbe. In der Ausstellung_ Zusammen (im) Fluss_ präsentieren Sie ihre Arbeiten. Der Titel greift das Konzept der Konfluenz auf, das auf den quilombola Meister Antônio Bispo dos Santos zurückgeht:
„Ein Fluss hört nicht auf, ein Fluss zu sein, weil er mit einem anderen Fluss zusammenfließt; im Gegenteil, er bleibt er selbst und wird zu anderen Flüssen, er wird stärker. Wenn wir zusammenfließen, hören wir nicht auf, wir selbst zu sein, wir bleiben wir und werden andere Menschen – wir gehen darin auf. Die Konfluenz ist eine Kraft, in der wir aufgehen, die zunimmt, die sich ausdehnt.“
Am 24. Oktober 2025 ab 15 Uhr laden wir herzlich zur Ausstellung „Zusammen (im) Fluss“ in die Bootswerkstatt der Honigfabrik in Wilhelmsburg ein. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil des Programms der Hamburger Horizonte, die sich 2025 dem Thema „Über Wasser“ widmen.

Confluence– that was the objective of a project seminar held in the summer semester of 2025 under the direction of Dr. Katrin Singer and Dr. Isabel von Holt. To this end, students from the Institute for Liberal Arts & Sciences and the Institute for Geography explored thinking and practicing around and with rivers from various disciplinary perspectives and got to know the river on their doorstep better: the Tidal Elbe. They present their work in the exhibition – Confluence. The title picks up on the concept of confluence, which goes back to the quilombola master Antônio Bispo dos Santos: “A river does not cease to be a river because it flows together with another river; on the contrary, it remains itself and becomes other rivers, it becomess tronger. When we flow together, we do not cease to be ourselves, we remain ourselves and become other people – we merge into it. Confluence is a force in which we merge, which increases, which expands.”
On October 24, 2025, starting at 3 p.m., we cordially invite you to the exhibition Together (in) Flow at the boat workshop of the Honigfabrik in Wilhelmsburg. The event is part of the Hamburg Horizons program, which will be dedicated to the theme “Above Water” in 2025.

Auf der Vollversammlung wählen wir einen neuen Fachschaftsrat (FSR), das Vertretungsorgan von uns Studierenden. Der FSR wird von der bisherigen Arbeit berichten, sowie sich und die Pläne für das kommende Semester vorstellen.
Gemeinsam wollen wir zudem aktuelle Entwicklungen der Sparpolitik diskutieren und uns darüber austauschen, wie wir uns gegen Kürzungen an unserer Uni und für gute Studienbedingungen einsetzen können!
Die Vollversammlung findet am Montag, den 20.10.25 um 18h in Hörsaal 1 im Geomatikum statt. Die Tagesordnung folgt.

Whether you’re studying for a Bachelor’s, Master’s, teaching degree, or a minor – let’s come together as Geo students! At the General Assembly, we will elect a new Student Council (FSR), the representative body for us students. The current FSR will report on their work, introduce themselves, and present their plans for the upcoming semester. Together, we also want to discuss current developments related to budget cuts and exchange ideas on how we can stand up against cutbacks at our university and fight for good study conditions! The General Assembly will take place on Monday, October 20th, 2025 at 6 PM in Lecture Hall 1 at the Geomatikum. The agenda will follow soon. Come join us! P.S. ***english version below*** Nicht nur das Wintersemester hat wieder angefangen, sondern auch der „Herbst der Reformen“ hat begonnen. Während auf bundespolitischer Ebene der Sozialstaat angegriffen wird, erleben wir auch an der Uni dramatische Kürzungen, die unsere Studien- und Arbeitsbedingungen gefährden. Es liegt an uns, das nicht einfach hinzunehmen, sondern uns dagegen zu organisieren und Widerstand zu leisten!
In diesem Sinne, kommt zu den folgenden Veranstaltungen und werdet aktiv!
Kundgebung des AStA: Am Donnerstag den 16.10. organisiert der AStA um 13:30 Uhr eine Kundgebung gegen die Erhöhung des Semesterbeitrags und die laufenden Kürzungen – und wir sind natürlich mit dabei. Wir werden um 13:15 Uhr gemeinsam vom Geomatikum losgehen und halten dann auch einen eigenen Redebeitrag. Also kommt mit, zeigen wir der Uni-Leitung gemeinsam, was wir von den Kürzungen und den schlechter werdenden Studienbedingungen halten!
GgK-Kennenlernen: Am Freitag den 17.10. wollen wir uns dann ab 17 Uhr in gemütlicher Atmosphäre und mit Snacks und Getränken, in der Kartensammlung treffen, um uns besser kennenzulernen, uns über den Stand der Dinge auszutauschen und vor allem eins: um kreativ zu werden! Denn in den nächsten Monaten stehen noch einige Aktionen an, für die es Banner, Schilder und Tapeten braucht. Kommt vorbei, lernt uns kennen und lasst uns gemeinsam basteln, malen und ’nen guten Abend haben!
FSR-Vollversammlung: Am Montag den 20.10. um 18 Uhr in H1 folgt dann mit der Vollversammlung der Geographie-Studis ein etwas offizieller, aber umso wichtiger Termin. Auf der Vollversammlung wird nicht nur der Fachschaftsrat gewählt, sondern sie ist auch der zentrale Ort, an dem wir uns als Studis über die aktuelle Kürzungspolitik informieren und austauschen können und an dem wir gemeinsam beschließen können, wie wir als Studis uns bzgl. der Kürzungen verhalten wollen. Also kommt zahlreich und diskutiert mit!
It’s not just the winter semester that is starting again – the “autumn of reforms” has begun as well. While at the federal level, the social welfare state as we know it is being dismantled, we’re also experiencing drastic cuts at the university that threaten our study and working conditions. It’s up to us to not just accept this, but to get organized and resist!

AStA Rally: On Thursday, October 16, the AStA is organizing a rally at 1:30 PM against the increase in the semester fee and the ongoing budget cuts – and of course, we’ll be there too. We’ll leave together from the Geomatikum at 1:15 PM and will also give our own little speech at the rally. So come along and let’s show the university administration what we think of the cuts and the worsening study conditions!
GgK Get-Together: On Friday, October 17, we’ll meet at 5 PM in the map collection room for a relaxed evening with snacks and drinks to get to know each other better, exchange updates, and most importantly – get creative! Over the next few months, we’ll have plenty of actions coming up that need banners, signs, and posters. So stop by and join us for some crafting, painting, and a good time!
FSR General Assembly: On Monday, October 20 at 6 PM in H1, the General Assembly of Geography Students will take place – a slightly more official but all the more important event. Not only will the student council be elected, but it’s also the central space where we, as students, can inform ourselves and discuss the current austerity policies and decide together how we want to respond to the cuts. Come in large numbers and take part in the discussion!
zum Start des neuen Semesters wollen wir euch am 23.10 zu einem Spieleabend einladen. Wir treffen uns ab 18 Uhr in Raum 740. A few folks from Meteorology and Oceanography have been organising a queer meet-up over the past few weeks, where all queer students (and allies, of course) from Earth System Sciences are welcome.
