Studentische Tutor*innen im Wintersemester 2025/26

Für das Wintersemester 2025/26 werden engagierte Tutor*innen gesucht, die Erstsemester beim wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten unterstützen. Inhalte sind u.a. Literaturarbeit, Zitierregeln, Umgang mit Daten, Entwicklung von Fragestellungen und Verfassen von Hausarbeiten. Voraussetzung sind sichere Kenntnisse der Grundlagen wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens und Freude daran, neue Studierende zu begleiten. Zur Unterstützung gibt es regelmäßige Vorbereitungstreffen.

Student Tutors for Winter Semester 2025/26

For the winter semester 2025/26, dedicated student tutors are sought to support first-semester students with academic skills. Topics include literature research, citation rules, data handling, developing research questions, and writing term papers. Required are solid knowledge of academic work fundamentals and enthusiasm for supporting new students. Regular preparation meetings will be offered for support.

2) Geomatikum wird 50 – Karaoke heute!/ Geomatikum turns 50 – Karaoke tonight!

Liebe alle,
heute ist es so weit! Wir wollen mit euch feiern, denn das Geomatikum wird 50🎉 Und wie könnte man das besser, als mit einer flotten Runde Karaoke! Zusammen mit den Mathestudis erwarten wir euch ab 18:30 im Raum 740, um dann ausgelassen zu euren Liebsten Songs zu performen.

Dear Geos,
today, 19 June, there will be a geocinema showing the documentary movie “ Bei uns heißt sie Hanka“ (here she is called Hanka). It is about Sorbian identity today. Sorbs are a small Slavic minority in Lusatia (located in Poland and Germany). The director Grit Lemke has got Sorbian roots herself and discovers Sorbian culture which is endangered after a long time of oppression.

4) Vollversammlung am 23.06./ General Assembly June 23

Vollversammlung der Geographie am 23.06.2025, 18:00 Uhr, H5

Liebe Geos!

Wir sind an einem Punkt angekommen, an dem die Kürzungspolitik an der Uni Hamburg die Lehre und den Betrieb hier am Institut massiv beeinträchtigt. Das darf uns nicht egal sein! Die Qualität unserer Ausbildung leidet unter den konstanten Kürzungen und auch die Arbeitsbedingungen der Mitarbeitenden hier am Institut verschlechtern sich immer weiter. Zudem wurde eine Umstrukturierung des Fachbereichs angestoßen, mit dem Zweck, die Institute aufzulösen, „Synergien zu schaffen“ und damit weitere Kürzungen zu ermöglichen. Das birgt das Risiko, dass wir Möglichkeiten zur Mitbestimmung verlieren und weniger Einfluss auf Studienbedingungen und Lehre haben. Auch der Umzug ins Haus der Erde rückt in immer weitere Ferne, vor 2026 wird das Gebäude nicht eröffnet. Außerdem sind viele Detailfragen zum Umzug noch ungeklärt. Es ist Zeit, aktiv zu werden! Wir laden euch ein zur Vollversammlung der Geographie am 23.06. um 18 Uhr in H5, um die Lage zu besprechen und nach Möglichkeiten zu suchen, für gute Studienbedingungen einzustehen!

Dear Geo students!
We have reached a point where the budget cuts at the University of Hamburg are massively affecting teaching and operations at our institute. We cannot ignore this! The quality of our education is suffering due to constant cuts, and the working conditions for staff at the institute are continually deteriorating.
In addition, a restructuring of the faculty has been initiated with the aim of dissolving the institutes, “creating synergies,” and thereby enabling further cuts. This carries the risk that we will lose opportunities for co-determination and have less influence over our study conditions and teaching.
Moreover, the move to the Haus der Erde is being postponed further and further; the building will not open before 2026. Many details about the move are still unclear.
It is time to take action! We invite you to the General Assembly of the Geography Department on June 23 at 6:00 pm in H5 to discuss the situation and look for ways to stand up for good study conditions together!

5) Workshop „Decolonize UHH“ am 20.06./ Decolonize UHH” Workshop on June 20

Herzliche Einladung an alle im Institut:

Im Rahmen der Kampagne Decolonize UHH laden wir euch zu einem interaktiven Workshop ein, der den Blick auf die Mechanismen (post)kolonialer Wissensproduktion richtet. Gemeinsam wollen wir erkunden, welche Praktiken, Vorstellungen und imaginierten Welten auch heute noch wirksam sind – auch bei unserer eigenen Wissensproduktion.
Der Workshop findet im Museum der Natur Hamburg und dem Institut für Geographie – einem Nachfolgeinstitut des Hamburgischen Kolonialinstitutes – statt. Gemeinsam durchstreifen wir ein Museum, eine Kartensammlung und eine Bibliothek, stellen Fragen zu Objekten, entdecken historische Kontinuitäten und hinterfragen, wie koloniale Perspektiven die Gegenwart prägen. Dabei gehen wir über eine bloße historische Betrachtung hinaus: Wir setzen uns auch mit aktuellen Praktiken, internalisierten Vorstellungen und wirkmächtigen Imaginationsräumen auseinander – und das über das Fach der Geographie hinaus.
Alle, die Interesse haben, Wissensproduktion aus einer kritischen, postkolonialen Perspektive zu reflektieren, sind herzlich eingeladen. Vorkenntnisse sind keine Voraussetzung – freut euch auf einen inspirierenden Austausch und neue Perspektiven.
Der Workshop startet am Freitag, den 20. Juni um 15 Uhr vor dem Eingang des Museums der Natur Hamburg – Zoologie (Bundesstraße 52) und dauert ca. 3 Stunden.
Für eine bessere Planung meldet euch bitte unter  an und gebt an, wenn ihr eine englische Übersetzung benötigt. Wir freuen uns auf eure Teilnahme.

A warm invitation to everyone at the institute:

As part of the Decolonise UHH campaign, we invite you to an interactive workshop that focuses on the mechanisms of (post)colonial knowledge production. Together we want to explore which practices, ideas and imagined worlds are still effective today – including in our own knowledge production.

The workshop will take place at the Museum der Natur Hamburg and the Institute of Geography – a successor institute to the Hamburg Colonial Institute. Together we will explore a museum, a map collection and a library, ask questions about objects, discover historical continuities and scrutinise how colonial perspectives shape the present. In doing so, we will go beyond mere historical observation: we will also look at current practices, internalised ideas and powerful spaces of imagination – beyond the subject of geography.

Anyone interested in reflecting on knowledge production from a critical, postcolonial perspective is cordially invited to attend. No prior knowledge is required – look forward to an inspiring exchange and new perspectives.

The workshop starts on Friday, 20 June at 3 pm in front of the entrance of the Museum der Natur Hamburg – Zoologie (Bundesstraße 52) and lasts about 3 hours.
